Honest Interfaces

Whenever elements of the interface are confusing, misleading or even suspicious, the users’ trust will begin to erode. When even the slightest hint of bad behaviour sneaks in, the user has already begun to withdraw from further interaction.

The future. Is it really here?

The future of our industry now looks totally different than the past. It looks like a sheet of paper, and it’s called the  It’s not about typing or clicking; it’s about touching. It’s not about text, or even animation, it’s about video. It’s not about a local disk, or even a desktop, it’s about the cloud. It’s not about pulling information; it’s about push. It’s not about repurposing old software, it’s about writing everything from scratch (because you want to take advantage of the awesome potential of the new computers and the new cloud—and because you have to reach this pinnacle). Finally, the industry is fun again.

Twitter :: a force for good?

Twitter

Be a force for good.

“That’s Twitter’s new foundational principle — and it’s interesting because it takes Google’s foundational principle and does it one better. Will Twitter live up to it? Perhaps. What’s important about it is how it focuses Twitter, as we discussed, on creating real, meaningful, sustainable value. That’s something 95% of organizations can’t do — but increasingly, exactly what people, communities, and society demand.”

Umair Haque, talking about his interview with Twitter’s Evan Williams, via Harvard Business Review.

Mixtape too

Here’s the second mixtape I’ve put together (origianlly for my tumblr). I’m kind-of-really getting into this, so there may be some more mixtapes to come.

A bit of old and new stuff that I’ve been listening to, of various genres. Hope you like it.

Penguins take on the iPad

Another something to convince you that the iPad will be game changing. Check out this video that Penguin Books have put together. Amazing.

Can you make sales from Twitter?

So I was looking for some nerdy stuff on the internet just the other day. PSD to WordPress conversion services, if you must know.

So i mentioned it on Twitter:

Not long after, I received this @ reply:

OK … so I don’t know this person. They found me, I’m guessing, through some sort of automated twiitter search.

So sure. I checked out their website. Looks OK. So they’re instantly in my consideration set.

But ShopHTML, the brand I was conversing with, took it further:

The conversation went on … I won’t bore you with anymore details.

Like wise, when I recommended a capsule hotel in Kyoto to a friend for her upcoming Japan trip:

I receive this polite, responsive and personable note from the hotel (they’re called 9hours.jp, by the way, you should check them out):

So here’s two examples of brands. On the other side of the world to me. Trying to help me out, and yes, make a sale as well.

There was nothing creepy about it. It wasn’t spammy, and the person on the other end was acting just like a person.

And it struck me. You can use Twitter as a marketing tool. Even a sales tool. As long as you’re helpful and non-intrusive, it’s a perfectly good way for people to find new customers and generate leads.

The marketing takeout here is simple. You just have to follow one rule. Don’t be a dick.

Stick with that rule you’ll get along just fine.

A few changes around here

Ok, I’m going to mix things up a bit on this blog. Starting with a new theme. And a new start to this blogging thing. Just like I promise every 6 months.

And a mixtape, which I posted on my Tumblr a little while ago.

Ok, here it is … My very first ever tumblr mixtape. Complete with front and backcover. Take it with you into your autumn or spring, whatever it may be for you.

How would I describe it? Upbeat in a melancholy way. A bit electronic. At times icelandic. With lots of the cool bands. And not complete without a Wings song. Real hipsterlike.
